Southern California Alternative Learners' Ensemble (SCALE) A unique homeschool orchestra for all ages and abilities, including beginning strings up to advanced musicians of any instrument. Musicians who play guitars, percussion, recorders, keyboards, and other instruments which are usually left out of a traditional orchestra setting are welcome. Most of the regulars are military veterans who recreate a wide variety of historical battles in miniature for study and fun. The ages of the participants range from 10 to 60 and there is usually 20-25 attendees. In the past they have recreated Julius Caesar's invasion of Brittan, The Battle of the Bulge, Gettysburg and battles from the Napoleonic age. You would be hard pressed to find an Irregular who was a bad history student, and a few of the regulars actually teach the subject! They are always looking for inspiration so if your home school students are covering World War One, for example, a Saturday outing that reinforces the lesson might help to make the information more real.
