The Classical Historian teaches students how to “Take a Stand!” Too often, American students are forced to memorize dates and people and repeat what one author thinks. After the course, they forget what they learned. Worse, according to author Dorothy Sayers, they are let out into the world without the skills to analyze history, current events, and modern media.
With the Take a Stand! curriculum, students acquire the skills of the historian and use these tools to analyze history from a number of sources. Challenged with open-ended questions, students research the past, form historical judgment, and defend their perspective in a Socratic discussion and analytical writing. Students not only remember what they learn, they acquire skills that will serve them throughout life.
