The Best of Times, The Worst of Times

One Week of Studies
  1. Recite 3 Nephi 27:27.
    Read 4 Nephi 1:1-23.
    • Verses 1-18: Do you wish you could have lived during this time? Perhaps this is what it will be like during the Millennium. What can you do to live your life more like that now?
    • Verse 15: What do you need to do to help reduce contention?
    • Verse 16: Have you ever considered that the more you choose the right, the happier you are?
    • Verse 19: Add Amos to the Book of Mormon Record Keepers chart.
    • Verse 21: Add Amos (the younger) to the Book of Mormon Record Keepers chart.
    • Verse 23: When a group of people all keep the commandments it is inevitable that they become rich. Why?

  2. Recite 3 Nephi 27:27.
    Read 4 Nephi 1:24-49.
    • Verses 24-46: This second half of this chapter is vastly different from the first half. Notice how even the church members struggled and fell. Can you identify some things in this chapter that you might struggle with?
    • Verse 47: Add Ammaron to the Book of Mormon Record Keepers chart.

  3. Recite 3 Nephi 27:27.
    Read Mormon 1.
    • Verses 2-5: Add Mormon to the Book of Mormon Record Keepers chart. The people must have been extremely wicked, so much that the only worthy person Ammaron could find was a ten-year-old boy. This also shows us that we can be spiritually great at any age. The Lord desires all of us to turn our hearts to him now, no matter what age we are.
    • Verses 13 & 14: If we don't have miracles and blessings in our lives, it is because of our own wickedness and unbelief.
    • Verse 15: Wow! Everyone around Mormon is wicked, yet Mormon, as a teenager, relies on the Spirit for his learning, even to the point where Jesus visited him!

  4. Recite 3 Nephi 27:27.
    Read Mormon 2.
    • Verses 4-6: Put Angola, David, and Joshua on the map.
    • Verse 13: When you feel sad, so you let your emotions turn to anger, or do you let your sorrow lead you to turn to the Lord?
    • Verse 16: Put Jashon on the map.
    • Verse 19: How could Mormon know that he will be saved?
    • Verse 20: Put Shem on the map.

  5. Recite 3 Nephi 27:27
    Read Mormon 3.
    • Verses 9 & 10: Here the Nephites made a big mistake. Already the Lord is not fighting their battles for them, because they have not invited him to. Now they are becoming bloodthirsty. If they avenge themselves by fighting the Lamanites, they will also be fighting against the Lord. What do you think will happen next?
    • Verse 21: All prophets testify of Jesus Christ.

  6. Recite 3 Nephi 27:27.
    Read Mormon 4.
    • Verse 3: Put Teancum on the map.
    • Verse 20: Put Boaz on the map.
    • Why is important for you to know about these battles?

  7. Recite 3 Nephi 27:27.
    Read Mormon 5.
    • Verse 3: Put Jordon on the map.
    • Verses 8-24: This is a commentary by Mormon on the battle. He is talking directly to us and tells us what we, as individuals, can do to avoid such tradgedy.
